Big Red SEO’s Intro to Google Analytics Dashboards
Keeping tabs on a website’s most important metrics (traffic sources, active visitors, location, etc.) can be difficult, especially if you don’t have a lot of experience using the tools that Google provides webmasters for this purpose. If you’re new to using Google Analytics, we at Big Red SEO in Omaha are here to help! Our team of business SEO service providers will walk you through everything you need to know about Google Analytics Dashboards so that you can keep track of how your business website is performing!
So What is the Google Analytics Dashboard?
What do you think of when you hear the word “dashboard”? Probably the one in your car, the one you check as you’re flying down the highway—glance down and you can easily check on a number of key indicators of your car’s health: how much gas you have left, how your engine’s running, whether you’re about to overheat, and more.
Well, the Google Analytics Dashboard works the same way! Simply by logging in to your Google Analytics account you can see at a glance how your business website is running. While your car dashboard only gives you a few of the most important readings you need, though, your Google Analytics Dashboard offers nearly limitless customization options, giving you access to all of the performance indicators you could ever want!
Setting Up a New Dashboard
Your account with Google Analytics comes with a default dashboard already set up, which may or may not be useful to you. You can access that by going into the Admin panel, clicking on the “property” (website) you want to view information on, then clicking on “Dashboards” in the left-hand menu. Choose “Private” and right under that choose “My Dashboard” and you’re there! Check it out and get used to how it functions, then you can create one of your own if you want.
Your two options for creating a new dashboard from the ground up are as follows—you can 1) create an entirely new dashboard from scratch, or 2) copy a template that’s already been created (there are thousands of these online). Our team of business SEO service providers here at Big Red SEO will walk you through both of these procedures.
Creating a New Dashboard from Scratch
While you’re logged in, click on “New Dashboard” under the Dashboards menu on the left-hand side. At this point you can choose to start with a Blank Canvas or a Starter Dashboard, which provides some example widgets for you to start with. Our Omaha search engine optimization experts at Big Red SEO suggest you start with the Starter Dashboard, since this gives you an idea of what an example dashboard can look like and you can always delete the example widgets when you don’t need them anymore.
A good rule to keep in mind when building your first dashboard is to include the top 10-15 metrics you want to track. These should be the metrics you check first and often in Google Analytics.
Using a Google Analytics Dashboard Template
First, make sure that you’re logged in to your Google Analytics account. Then, whenever you find a shared dashboard that you want to use, click the link, assign it to the particular property you want, and bingo, you’re done. For more help with dashboard templates, our Omaha business SEO service providers suggest you check out Custom Report Sharing, which compiles a list of helpful templates for a variety of business models.
Note: Using a dashboard template shared by someone else won’t cause any private information to be shared between you. The person sharing their dashboard template is simply allowing you to use the same dashboard configuration that worked for them.
