Many are wary of the process of building links as a method of achieving big results in SEO, but before you start believing all the talk about link-building being dead, our search engine experts at Big Red SEO in Omaha want to tell you that link-building is alive and well, if you know the rules.

    No matter what tactics come and go when it comes to link-building, one thing remains true: if you play by the rules (i.e. follow current best search engine optimization practices), you really can win. It’s definitely more difficult to play now that Google has donned the referee’s stripey shirt, calling fouls and handing out penalties, but don’t give up simply because you don’t know all the rules yet!     You Can’t Win the Link-Building Game if You Buck the System

    One thing we hear a lot of companies say is that they don’t care what the rules are—they know what works and they’re going to do what works for their clients. They say this because it makes them sound like bottom-line-focused Robin Hoods, raising their proud middle fingers to “The Man” and doing what they know is best. In other words, they’re the good guys who are looking out for you and they don’t care what they have to do to get you results.

    Playing Robin Hood isn’t a bad thing when the authority is wrong. The problem with it in this case, though, is that Google is most definitely right. The means you take to get to the end you want really do matter. You’re not just link-building to get more traffic to your site—we all know that higher traffic doesn’t equal higher conversion rates. Google wants us to start thinking about link-building as a targeted enterprise, establishing relationships with like-minded partners in order to attract more people who have an interest in what you’re selling.

    Don’t Build Links for Short-Term Gains

    While it might be tempting to engage in some of the black hat SEO techniques that other Omaha search engine experts encourage, they don’t have your company’s best interests in mind. Here are link-building methods you’ll want to avoid:

    • Scaling Links: Be very careful with links that scale. These are links that go into widgets, author bio boxes, or other automatically replicated texts. If you have too many links coming from these sources with anchor text that looks manipulated, chances are you’ll get a penalty from Google.
    • Asking for Anchor Text: If there’s one rule you should follow at all times, it’s this: NEVER ask for specific keyword anchor text. In fact, we’ll go one further—NEVER ask for anchor text. Period. By trying to engineer your links in this way, you make them look very unnatural, creating patterns that Google can spot and slap a penalty on faster than…faster than…well, something that’s really, really fast. It’s better to let people link to your content the way they want; even if it’s not exactly the link you want, it’s a natural link, and these do more for your SEO efforts in the long run.
