Having attractive title tags and meta descriptions are important to avoid being ignored (or worse, reviled!) by searchers on the search engine results pages, but the story of search engine optimization doesn’t end there.

    After the first impression, once you get a searcher to click through to your site, there’s still a lot that can go wrong. It’s incredibly easy, for instance, for someone to bail on your website within seconds and increase your bounce rate, which Google takes very seriously in establishing rankings.     Basic SEO Step 3: Use Your Heading Tags Effectively

    At Big Red SEO, we’re constantly amazed at how many blogs we see on a daily basis that fail to use heading tags (or H tags) to their advantage! There’s definitely a strategic value in using them on a consistent basis, so if you don’t know what we’re talking about, listen up!

    Using H1, H2, H3 tags (and so on and so forth) effectively starts at the top. Your H1 tag, essentially your article’s title, should contain your main keyword early on. Afterward, H2 tags are used to break up your body text into different sections. Why is this? It’s a great opportunity to reintroduce your keywords, as well as making the article easier to read and skimmable for users. This is on-page SEO that works; it’s good for the reader AND good for the search engines!

    Note: Only use one H1 tag! The others can be used multiple times if you need—the only thing to remember is to use them in ascending order. That is, H1 for your title, H2s for your section titles, H3s for sub-section titles, and so on. For example, your title should be an H1 tag, your body section headings H2s, and if you elect to use an H3 you shouldn’t follow it with an H1 (but following with an H2 is fine). Often times people will change their H tags based on the way the font looks on the page.     Basic SEO Step 4: Content, Content, Content

    A lot of lip service gets paid to content today—it’s King, it’s Monarchy, it rules with an iron fist over the search engine optimization realm. All this content reverence is well-deserved, seeing as how you can’t get anywhere as a business if your website’s full of non value content. None of the other tools of SEO mean anything if there isn’t a solid basis of content underneath for support.

    Make sure that your content is deep, rich in value to your potential customers, and optimized with keywords and phrases that people actually use to search for what you’re selling. Imagine yourself as a potential customer who’d never heard of your product or service before now. You’re intrigued, but you want more information about it before you commit to buying. What information would you want to see on the site? What would convince you? That’s the kind of content we’re talking about.

    Now that we’ve gone through what to do, here’s what not to do:

    • Don’t write thin content. What’s thin content? There are a number of ways to define it—in short though, thin content is any writing that doesn’t provide real, unique, and relevant value to your customers. This means no copy/pasting from other sources just to populate your pages; not only is this a bad practice all-around, it’s also terrible for your search engine optimization efforts because Google only recognizes and ranks the original source of the content.
    • Don’t stuff your keywords. Keyword stuffing is an old-school SEO practice that’s long since been struck down as illegitimate by Google and other search engines. If you’re not familiar with the term, keyword stuffing is the practice of “stuffing” as many of your target keywords as possible into your content so that it has a better chance of showing up in search engine results. Google and others have wised up to this practice, though, and won’t rank content that tries to keyword stuff itself to the top.
