We are constantly asked how someone would get their website a top ranking within Google. People want to know the process of how the web works and why search engine optimization is so important.

At times, we can explain things so in-depth, the information goes right over their head, so we have selected a handful of important things every business owner, SEO, or marketing person should know. Below is a list of factors that Big Red SEO believes can determine how long it will take to get listed on Google Page One.

    Age Matters

When creating a website it will take some time for Google to show your new site within the search results. Even if you submit your site to Google, your website should be linked to other websites for Google to index your site. While Google can find your site without having any links, it can be a very long time before they list anything in their search results. In addition, your website has to earn the trust of Google and this can take some time. We suggest targeting less competitive keywords to start which can take you from four to six months to gain a minimum level of trust that is needed to get to Google Page One.

Make it Easy for Google to Find Your Pages with Optimization

Optimizing your website’s content is by far the most important step in getting your website recognized for the right content and keywords. It is extremely important you make it easy for the search engines to be able to index your web pages. By creating rich content within your site, will help search separate the pages and have a higher chance at the web pages getting added to their database of websites. At times a code error can cause your website to block Google by accident. Do not worry, you can still get a top ranking on the searching engines for your established site if you correct this error. Typically there is a broken .htaccess file, a robot.txt file or there are problems with the website navigation.

    Competition and Keywords

Keywords are the key essential tool for getting your website a top ranking. When you are brainstorming on what keywords to go after, keep in mind that you will more than likely be competing with big companies for the most popular keywords in your industry. The top ranked companies will have thousands of backlinks and pages already established with Google. Do not get discouraged.  As a successful SEO Company in Omaha, we recommend starting with very targeted keyword phrases instead of single words. Choose a phrase with four or five words to describe your business. This will help you work your way up to the more competitive keywords once your website is established. Last month we wrote an article “Generate keywords from Google Analytics“, where you can review and learn the basic steps of this efficient tool.

Linking, the More Back Links, the Higher Your Ranking

The more quality backlinks a website has, the quicker Google will pick up the changes on your website. If your website has great content but only a few backlinks then it won’t get the top ranking your expecting. You’ll probably find companies on the web that will sell you 250,000 backlinks for $25 or some outrageous numbers.  Do NOT be fooled, these will be of ZERO benefits to you. Creating quality inbound links is what matters.  Be aware also, that if you purchase links like this, Google will be able to tell that you’re trying to spam your words, and that can land you in hot water also!

To summarize; to get successful search engine optimization within a website, great content is a must. Trust is important to Google, so make sure you are following their rules and let your website age a little. Keywords are the second step of optimizing your website- make sure the content within the website has unique content and can be separated from your other web pages. Lastly, be sure your website has backlinks.  Without quality backlinks, all your hard work on your website has been done for nothing.  Be aware that achieving too many backlinks too quickly will get you penalized by Google.
