It feels like it was only just the other day that we were talking about the October 2023 Google Core Update on Twitter, and for that matter, the Google Core Update in August 2023, but here we are again! For the fourth time this year, Google is making a major change to its core algorithm: March, September, October, and November. So what is happening, what’s changing, and who does the core update affect?

Understanding the November 2023 Core Update

The frequency of Google’s core updates in 2023 has been unprecedented, with the November 2nd update marking the fourth major change this year. Website owners, SEO experts, and digital marketers are once again on high alert to understand the implications of this latest update.

While Google is continually making updates throughout the year, I don’t think any of us would have expected to see four core updates so far, and the year is not done. Could Google release a December update? Sure. Will the SEO world go insane if they do? Definitely, it’s Christmas Season after all. That’s no time to be making major changes to a site!

    Product/Service Reviews System Update

Big Red SEO, more than just Apples vs Oranges

The big focus of the November 2023 Core Update is the product and service reviews system. Google is taking significant steps to enhance the quality and relevance of product and service reviews available on the internet. This update is designed to reward high-quality reviews rather than mere summaries or overviews.

Specifically, the update targets articles, blog posts, and similar standalone content that provides insights into a product or service. Google’s algorithms will now assess whether the content offers a recommendation, an opinion, or an in-depth analysis, and then rank them accordingly. What’s essential to note is that the evaluation pertains to the content created on the webpage itself and not 3rd-party reviews submitted by customers.

Potential Impact on Single-Page Content and More

While this core update primarily affects single-page content, it will be looking closely at head-to-head product comparisons and lists of recommendations. If your website is heavily focused on product and service reviews, and if it frequently presents such reviews and comparisons, you could potentially see a sitewide effect.

It’s crucial to clarify that this update is unrelated to the Google Business Reviews system. Instead, it focuses on product and service reviews that websites publish as their content.

Earning SEO Bonus Points: Writing High-Quality Reviews

As Google continues to refine its search algorithms, website owners should take note of the importance of creating high-quality reviews to earn SEO bonus points. To maximize your website’s visibility and credibility, it’s important to ensure that your content meets the standards set by Google for high-quality reviews.

What exactly does Google mean by “high-quality reviews”? According to Google’s guidelines, high-quality reviews should provide valuable insights, be well-researched, and offer a comprehensive perspective on the product or service in question. By adhering to these guidelines, you can enhance your content’s appeal to both readers and search engines.
