It’s as simple as that. Now that we have that out of the way, you may be wondering just how to go about figuring out which keywords you should be going after, and what to do with them once you have them.
Today, our Omaha SEO team will go over a few things not to do with keywords and give you some insights into how we can choose the keywords that will get you to the top of the search engine rankings!
1. No Targeting Single Word Phrases
When you’re trying to get your business website to rank for industry-relevant keywords, you don’t have much of a chance with single word phrases. Why?
Say that you’re a window installation company in Omaha that’s just getting into the search engine optimization game. You think a good keyword to target on your website is “windows.” Sounds pretty good, right? It has something to do with your business and it’s broad enough to get a lot of traffic, but here’s the rub–when someone types “windows” into Google, they could be talking about a million different things. They could be talking about Windows 8 or they could be looking to get new windows cleaned, neither of which has anything to do with your business!
To avoid this kind of situation yourself, don’t try to target single word phrases. Unless the word you’re going after could lead a searcher to your services and only your services, going after single words is a bad Omaha SEO strategy.
2. No False Descriptors in Omaha SEO
This is an extension of rule #1. When you target single word phrases that are overly broad in order to simply attract more traffic, chances are you’re going to be sticking yourself with a descriptor that doesn’t describe what your business does very well.
Take this for example–you run a clothing company, and you think that optimizing your website for the keyword “clothing” is going to take you places. “Clothing” might work for your business if you sell every kind of clothing under the sun, but if you don’t, you’re going to want to dig down into your niche to find the words people are using to try and find businesses like yours. This might include phrases like “clothing consignment,” “big and tall clothing,” or “discount designer clothing.”
The bottom line here is that the more specific you can be when choosing your targeted keywords, the more qualified traffic you’ll see coming to your website, and that’s what the Omaha SEO process is all about!
3. Say No to Crazy Competitive Keywords
For some reason, a lot of business owners are really attracted to incredibly competitive keywords. Our guess is that it’s the insanely high number of searches that occur for these phrases every month. Keyword search volume is only one of many concerns, though.
Our Omaha SEO team wants to make it clear that there’s nothing wrong with going after search terms with high competition, but it’s foolish to jump into the battle for top rankings for these keywords thinking that it won’t take long or be very expensive. In reality, it takes a looooooooong time to rank for highly competitive terms, so unless you have a limitless budget to throw at one of these keywords, then you’re better off diversifying with lower competition keywords and making up your search volumes elsewhere.
Hold the phone, though…does this mean that you should just give up on high competition words if you don’t have the big budgets necessary to get to the top with them as fast as you want? Not really. Our team suggests that you go ahead and optimize for these high competition keywords; just don’t expect immediate results. This is a long game you’re playing, but if your content is good enough and you really deserve to rank for those high competition keywords, eventually you will.
