SEO? I Know What That Is!

Every day I’m more and more surprised with the amount of people that not only know that SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, but that they also either “do it themselves” or have an SEO Company that they work with. Years ago, I used to have to describe my job to someone as that I worked on websites to help them reach higher rankings on Google and Yahoo.  These days I can just say that I’m an SEO Expert or an SEO Specialist and they know exactly what I mean.

Much of the change has only happened within the past 6 months due to the articles run by The Wall Street Journal regarding JC Penny and Overstock and how they manipulated the search engine results to get their websites ranked at the top of the search engine results pages (SERPs).

Why Every Business Needs To Understand SEO

These days, thanks to the recent exposure in the newspapers and on TV Shows, many people know what SEO is and what it can do for their site.  Many of those same people also know just how much damage hiring the wrong company for SEO can cause to their business. There are thousands of “SEO experts”, and thanks to the power of the Internet, anyone with a few dollars and a blog can claim to be an expert, but many of these same people are also operating their business on a shoe-string budget and the majority of them are also using tactics that are no longer legitimate ways of increasing traffic to a website.

Big Red SEO Explains Black Hat SEO Techniques

If you stumble upon a company that claims they can offer you “Number one position on Google for $49”, or even for $500 they’re probably using some Black Hat SEO practices. Black Hat is considered by all to potentially give you instant results, but as soon as Google finds out that you’re using those techniques, your website can disappear from Google rankings.

Ask yourself this question – does the proposal you were given sound shady or too good to be true?  If you answered yes, then run far away from whoever is pitching you the idea. Money doesn’t grow on trees. You can’t BUY your way to the top of Google for a few dollars, unless you’re using Google Adwords and even then, it’s going to cost a lot of money.

Why Having a Game Plan for SEO Is Important

Any legitimate Search Engine Optimization Company will provide you with a step by step game-plan on how they plan to increase the rankings of your website, and if anything doesn’t sound right, you need to stop talking to them and contact someone else.

I’ve worked with hundreds of business owners over the years, both through my work and time at the Omaha SEO Company, Big Red SEO and also through online forums and chamber of commerce events. There are no tricks to get your website to rank number one, it takes hard work!

WordPress Plug-in Spotlight: CubePoints

Gamification. It’s a funny word that means exactly what you’d think, the process of turning something into a game. If you run a blog for your business and are having a hard time keeping people engaged (i.e. your readership is dwindling and no one is commenting, sharing, tweeting, +1-ing, or any of those other great social –ings that indicate a healthy and vital blog), you might benefit from a little gamification.
